Wood Buffalo National Park

A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Coming in at nearly 45,000 square kilometres, Wood Buffalo National Park is Canada’s largest national park – and the third largest in the world. Wood Buffalo is found in northern Alberta and parts of the Northwest Territories – east of High Level.

Established in 1922 to protect a herd of wood bison, the park also conserves the Peace-Athabasca Delta, the Whooping Crane Summer Range, and even the world’s largest beaver dam.

Wildlife viewing yields bison, bear, moose, fox and more, while bird watchers are delighted to catch owls, cranes, hawks, and eagles – just get to the Salt Plains Viewpoint, Grosbeak Lake, or any patch of sweetgrass.

Hikers look forward to the Lane Lake Trail, while Pine Lake – and scenic rivers like Peace, Athabasca, and Slave – provide excellent canoeing and kayaking. Winter activities in the northern boreal forest include snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Wood Buffalo National Park’s night sky is also unmatched. Late summer brings on the bucket-list-topping Aurora Borealis and the Wood Buffalo Dark Sky Festival, and every night in between is just as stunning.
