Lava Beds National Monument

Found within the Modoc National Forest, the Lava Beds National Monument is a premier outdoor attraction in California. As you explore the reaches of the Cascade Region near Alturas, be sure you spend an afternoon at the monument.

The Lava Beds are comprised of a rugged landscape of volcanic features, 700 lava tube caves, historic battlefields and Native American rock art. Pick up a map from the visitor center to figure out which of the dozens of caves, you want to tour, before setting out on your journey. Enjoy a short and easy 0.8 mile hike to Symbol Bridge and the Big Painted Cave, to see the black and white Modoc-style pictographs.

Bring your camera to capture the Fleener Chimneys - formed when molten lava piled up creating a chimney in the middle. Learn about the history of the Modoc War from the interpretive signs along the 1.1 mile trail to the site of the battle. Discover northern California.
