Sports Venues In West Virginia Put You Close to The Action

West Virginia’s sporting venues are some of the most exciting and revered in the nation.

At West Virginia University you can watch Division 1 college play in one of several first-class stadiums. The WVU Coliseum holds 14,000 screaming fans and is where you’ll see the Mountaineers play basketball. Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium is for championship Mountaineer football – it regularly draws 60,000, making it more populous than the state’s biggest city!

Ice hockey is played in the modern Big Sandy Superstore Arena in Huntington. The striking Charleston Civic Center can hold more than 13,000 and is where you’ll see top-level high school basketball. Wheeling’s WesBanco Arena is home to the Wheeling Nailers ice hockey team.

Marshall University’s storied football team plays on the turf of Joan C. Edwards Stadium, which can seat more than 38,000 fans – which is more than three times the size of the entire student body. Football and lacrosse teams from the University of Charleston play at Laidley Field, while high school football teams in Bluefield play at storied Mitchell Stadium, which was built in 1935.

Baseball fans will flock to Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, which is home to the minor league West Virginia Power.

Monongalia County Ballpark

Plan for a thrilling day of sacrifice bunts, doubles down the line, and maybe even some homeruns – baseball is alive and well in West Virginia. Head north into Morgantown and check out the Monongalia County Ballpark, home field of two local teams: the WVU Mountaineers baseball team, and the West Virginia Black Bears of the New York-Penn League.

Opened in 2015, the Monongalia County Ballpark seats 3,500 fans, and can be found just west of the WVU campus – it's neatly nestled between Interstate 79 and the Monongahela River. The college baseball season lasts, approximately, from February through the end of June.
