Walk on the Oregon Trail at Scotts Bluff National Monument
An 800-foot high outcropping of rock easily visible against the expanse of sky and prairie, Scotts Bluff was an important landmark for settlers journeying along the Oregon Trail. Today, Scotts Bluff National Monument, near Sidney, offers modern visitors the chance to explore the landscape and the history of the area.
Get the facts about Scotts Bluff by stopping into the Oregon Trail Museum & Visitor Center. The three rooms cover the geology of the region, western art by William Henry Jackson, and the history of the westward expansion.
Drive the 1.6 miles of the Summit Road for views of the site or ride the Summit Shuttle with a park ranger who offers commentary. You'll encounter Living History Sites as you travel through the park. Actors bring the experience of fur traders and settlers to life. Be sure to get out of your car to hike at least a few steps on the Oregon Trail Pathway to follow in pioneers' literal footsteps. There are several other trails open for hiking and biking as well.
