Explore Kansas' Fort Larned National Historic Site

Among Kansas’ most intriguing historic attractions is the Fort Larned National Historic Site. Originally operational from 1859 through 1878, the Fort played a key role as an Army post during the Indian Wars era.

Visitors to this historic site are treated to living history exhibits, re-enactments, replicas, and interpretive displays. To heighten the effect of stepping back into time, you’ll also interact with park staff dressed in period attire.

Begin your explorations with a stop at the impressive museum inside the Visitor Center. Exhibits cover the Civil War, Indian Wars, Native American heritage displays, and Buffalo Soldiers, among other topics.

The Fort itself has been well-preserved and covers more than 700 acres. You can take ranger-led tours during the summer months, or enjoy a self-guided trek through replicas of the schoolhouse, soldiers’ barracks, blacksmith shop, officers’ quarters, and jail holding cells. A 5.5-mile trail is also open to the public that runs along the Fort Larned’s Santa Fe Trail Ruts, physical remnants of a disappearing commercial path that once linked the United States and Mexico.
