Effigy Mounds National Monument

Connect with the ancient spirit of the Mississippi River Valley at this archaeological treasure, a collection of 206 Native American burial mounds. Dating from 500 B.C. to 1300 A.D., these prehistoric structures offer a glimpse into the history and culture of the region. See impressive mounds in the shapes of animals, including bears and birds - and imagine what life was like here long ago.

Located near Dubuque, the mounds are surrounded by nature: forests, wetlands, and tallgrass prairies. Your self-guided tour of the site passes by ten points of interest and takes about an hour to complete. Be sure to stop by the Visitor’s Center to watch the 15-minute explanatory film.
