Alpine Skiing in the Connecticut

Visitors and residents of Connecticut look forward to ski season each winter. Thanks to ski areas like Mohawk Mountain and Ski Sundown, winter is a much-anticipated treat for downhill and cross-country skiers.

Set in western Connecticut, the Mount Southington Ski Area is home to 51 skiable acres – while the mountain itself has a high point of 525 feet and a vertical drop of 425 feet.

Mount Southington Ski Area is located in the town of Plantsville, just 10 miles southwest of Berlin and less than an hour north of West Haven.

Open daily from December through March, the Mount Southington features 14 runs – the longest of which is .08 miles – plus seven lifts. Mount Southington also has two freestyle terrain parks – Drop Zone for experienced snowboarders and Turkey Turn Park for beginners.

Also found in western Connecticut – about 30 miles west of the Mount Southington – the Woodbury Ski Area is just west of Waterbury and northeast of Danbury. Established in 1973 and referred to as “Rod’s,” the Woodbury Ski Area is commonly the first ski area to open for the season in New England. Woodbury features downhill skiing, snow tubing, snow boarding, and cross-country skiing – plus terrain parks and night skiing – all in Connecticut’s Southern Litchfield Hills.
