National Zoo

Our Nation's Capital region is filled with a wonderful variety of memorials, buildings and attractions. Adults and children alike, enjoy spending quality time together at the National Zoo, one of the oldest zoos in the country.

The zoo was established in 1889 by an Act of Congress and two years later incorporated into the Smithsonian Institution.

This accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums operates the 3,200-acre Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, in Front Royal, Virginia, where scientists study endangered species and conduct research.

Plan for a full day of fun at this popular Washington D.C. attraction, located in Rock Creek Park. The 163-acre Washington D.C. campus is home to 2,000 animals from almost 400 species, including giant pandas Tian Tian and Mei Xiang.

One of the most notable animals to have lived at the zoo, is Smokey Bear, a black bear cub rescued from a fire. He was the living symbol for the United States Forest Service's mascot, used in the national message to prevent forest fires. Admission is free, so visit often, while in this vibrant city.
