Tour Alabama’s Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site
Established in 1998, Alabama’s Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site honors the pilots who served as the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II. Located south of Opelika and a short drive from the Tuskegee National Forest, the historic site features two hangar museums, a variety of exhibits and ranger-led programs. Moton Field in Tuskegee was constructed in 1940 as the training site for the first African American military pilots. The accomplishments of the 15,000 men and women who shared the Tuskegee experience are commemorated at the site.
Hangar One includes an orientation room, exhibits on World War II, and a retrospective on life at Moton Field in the 1940s. See a full-size Red Tail P-51 Mustang replica in Hangar Two and view a film about the Tuskegee Airmen. Stop by the gift shop for books and souvenirs. The self-guided tour of the Moton Field grounds features interpretive signage. Popular activities include the Memorial Day Weekend Tuskegee Airmen Fly-In and the Annual Labor Day Fly-In. You’ll see vintage aircraft on display and enjoy incredible air maneuvers from experienced pilots who take part in the fly-over. Both events include vendors and food. The museums are open Monday-Saturday from 9am-4:30pm.
