Enjoy A Tour of Popular Government Sites in Alabama
Embark on a tour of the state’s major cities and you’ll encounter important government sites in Alabama. The Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery is a National Historic Landmark. The Greek Revival style building on Goat Hill was constructed in 1850, replacing a previous structure that burned. It is famous as the first Confederate Capitol Building, where delegates from Southern states voted to establish a new government.
In 1965 the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ended at the capitol steps. Over the years the Alabama Historical Commission has overseen restoration and renovations of the landmark building. Free guided tours are available. While you’re on the capitol grounds be sure to check out the Avenue of Flags.
The nearby Alabama Department of Archives and History on Washington Avenue was the first organization of its kind in the United States. The state-funded archives contain historical records, information on family genealogy, and museum exhibits. The Houston Memorial Library in Athens is a public library and museum housing 35,000 rare and new books. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the mansion was the home of Alabama Governor and U.S. Senator George S. Houston.
