Go Underground In Ohio
Ohio boasts numerous caverns where you can marvel at the unusual and colorful world underground.
Among the state’s top caverns is Ohio Caverns in West Liberty. This cave is part of a 35-acre park and once underground you will see striking limestone caverns and more than two miles of passageways. Of course, guided tours are offered. In Bellevue, Seneca Caverns is a natural landmark where you can take tours and, later, partake in gem mining! In Logan, Ash Cave is an enormous natural cavern with a waterfall. It’s surrounded native hardwood forest and features numerous hiking trails.
In Carey, Indian Hill Caverns are a unique cave formation found in a limestone-dolomite ridge. This family destination offers guided tours and is home to a research site where scholars study evidence of prehistoric creatures found here. In Delaware, you can visit Olentangy Indian Caverns, where local tribes once lived. For something different, Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center in Put-In-Bay has a limestone cave plus gem mining, a rock wall, and a butterfly house. And don’t miss visiting the Lewisburg Haunted Cave – it’s a mashup of a cave and a haunted house and has been named one of Dayton’s best attractions.
Ohio Caverns
Officially the largest Cave system in Ohio, the Ohio Caverns were discovered in 1897 by a local farmhand. The beautiful snow cavern is located near Wapakoneta and has since become a mainstay for tourism in central Ohio. Guests are invited to take a tour of the mile-long caves where they can view natural crystal formations, like the Crystal Sea and Natural Bridge, dating back over a hundred years. Outside of the cavern consists of amenities such as a gift shop, dining hall, and playground.
