The Battle of Ball's Bluff on October 21, 1861, was one of the early battles of the Civil War. A 300-man Union party crossed the Potomac to raid a Confederate camp, only to discover the "camp" was actually a row of trees that had been mistaken for tents. Ball's Bluff is home to the third smallest National Cemetery in the U.S. Fifty-four Union Army dead from the Battle of Ball's Bluff are interred in 25 graves in the half-acre plot; the identity of all of the interred except for one, James Allen of the 15th Massachusetts, are unknown.
