The Battle of Ball's Bluff on October 21, 1861, was one of the early battles of the Civil War. A 300-man Union party crossed the Potomac to raid a Confederate camp, only to discover the "camp" was actually a row of trees that had been mistaken for tents. You can walk the battlefield at Ball's Bluff Regional Park, 2.8 miles from Best Western Leesburg.
Ball's Bluff is home to the third smallest National Cemetery in the U.S. Fifty-four Union Army dead from the Battle of Ball's Bluff are interred in 25 graves in the half-acre plot; the identity of all of the interred except for one, James Allen of the 15th Massachusetts, are unknown.
