For the art lovers in your family, get your art fix at the Shaw Center for the Arts. It’s right in Baton Rouge, LA, it’s a great place to visit when you’re in the area. You’ll find the LSU Museum for the Arts within the Shaw Center. It houses university-affiliated collections and serves the community as both an educational and cultural center. On your next visit to Shreveport, LA, don’t pass on your chance to visit the Shreveport Municipal Memorial Auditorium. This is the spot where Elvis Presley made his debut. Others have followed like Johnny Cash, BB King, and James Brown. The venue started a show in the 1940’s called the Louisiana Hayride. This had many acts as part of the show and is believed to have given several stars their start, including Elvis. Give yourself over to years of talented musicians.
Shaw Center for the Arts
Opened in 2005, the Shaw Center for the Arts is a performing arts center and museum located in downtown Baton Rouge in the heart of Plantation Country. Formerly known as the Art Block, the center features both the LSU Museum of Art and LSU School of Art Glassell Gallery.
Also on-site is the Manship Theatre – a 325-seat performing arts venue showcasing theater, concerts, musicals, film, and more. Other facility highlights include several restaurants, the New Venture Theatre, and the River Terrace available for event rentals.
Shreveport Municipal Memorial Auditorium
Seating roughly 3,200 show goers, the Shreveport Municipal Memorial Auditorium, often referred to as the "Muni," is located in the heart of Shreveport. Built between 1926 and 1929, this National Historic Landmark has housed a variety of Broadway plays, theater productions, concerts and special events since its opening.
Between 1948 and 1960, the auditorium housed the Louisiana Hayride radio program igniting the careers of many greats, including Elvis Presley, Hank Williams and Johnny Cash. The Muni has gone through several renovations and continues to host events in northern Louisiana.
