Ocmulgee National Monument
Georgia's Native American heritage is preserved at Ocmulgee National Monument, where there are seven earthwork mounds spread across the 700 acres. The Native American presence in Central Georgia dates back more than 17,000 years. Archeological digs at the site have found numerous artifacts, displayed at the Ocmulgee National Monument Visitor Center.
The Archeological Museum at the Visitor Center focuses on the prehistoric Native American peoples who lived here, like the Muscogee people. After exploring the Visitor Center, head outside and follow the trails to see the Great Temple Mound, more than 55 feet high, and the completely reconstructed Ceremonial Earthlodge.
