Pipestone National Monument
Uncover Native American History at the Pipestone National Monument
Get educated about Native American history and culture at Pipestone National Monument in southwestern Minnesota. Learn about the argillite used to make ceremonial pipes, which played an important role in the religious practices of Plains Indians like the Dakota, Lakota, Sioux, and other tribes. Observe the Red Pipestone Quarries within the monument that comprises a Minnesota State Historic Site.
Come on out in the summer and see demonstrations of pipe-making. Local Native Americans, using techniques passed down from as many as four generations ago, carve the stones. Walk along a three-quarter mile trail and view pipestone quarries as well as a waterfall.
Stop in at the visitor center and see exhibits about the natural and cultural history of the site, including an orientation video detailing the history of the pipestone quarries and petroglyph display. This is one leg of your trip to Minnesota that you won’t want to miss.
